Find which school you are interested in attending, whether an Assoc. Degree or BSN program.
Meet with their admissions representatives to find out that school's unique criteria for admissions, including pre-requisite courses. The most common pre-reqs are in general biology, general chemistry, anatomy & physiology, and sometimes microbiology and developmental psychology and nutrition. There are also non-nursing courses in liberal arts / general education which will be required as part of the degree, things like English, sociology, humanities, etc.
Complete the pre-reqs and fulfill their admissions criteria and apply to the nursing program. It's competative for admissions in just about every school these days, so do whatever you can to position yourself high in their ranking system, whatever that may be. Definitely try to earn a high GPA.
Once you get through the nursing program and graduate, you are eligible to take your RN licensure exam for your state, the NCLEX. Once you pass that, you're an RN.

In California -
Most of the JC's in Cali (specifically the 9 cc's in the Los Angeles System) require that you take/complete:
Chemistry 51
Microbiology (usually has a prereq)
Psychology
Sociology
English 101
Intermediate algebra (may have a prereq if you dont place/score high on the assessment)
Anatomy
Physiology
So if you can take those and time your application so you are done when the next Nursing semester starts you should be good to go.
Good luck to you; its a great profession, you will always be in demand and you will make bank from your first position.
