K-Mart will train you, follow their procedures and pay ATTENTION. many cash registers now have an "amount tendered" key, when you enter the amount given to you be careful and use common sense. I have seen so many cashiers enter the wrong amount given and not even think about what change they gave back just because the register showed them the amount. the key to being an accurate cashier and not having cash shortages is to PAY ATTENTION and always follow proper cash handling procedures as directed by your employer. I had to give 'Colleen M' a thumbs up for the math part of her answer. the use of calculators in the 2nd & 3rd grade has been the death to any real math skills being learned.

well its probably good to know how to do, but they have the cash register that does all of that for you! :)

Yes you need to be able to make change mentally. Its very easy. All you need to do is count up. For instance if the bill was 9.48 and i gave you a 20 you would count up from 9.48 to 20 so 49, 50 = 2 pennies and now 2 quarters = 10 and a ten dollar bill takes you to 20. I must say if you're old enough to get job as a cashier and you cant do simple math then the school system has failed you. I am not trying to put you down I just find it repulsive how so many children seem to have such little math skills . I suggest you find an on line site that could help you learn better math skills. Trust me math is the most important knowledge you can have. Good luck an d take that job it can only help you to improve.

Most cash registers will tell you what change to give back. If you can count to ten then you already know how to make change mentally but you don't realize it. To make change mentally look at the total price of the item. Determine what number needs to be added to the total price to make an even dollar amount. Then look at the amount of money the customer is giving you. The difference is the change!

I am cashier-trained, and most of the cash registers tell you how much change to give. You do need to count the change, as you give it.
