Career Questions and Answers
What is wrong with my resume'?
Asked by April
I am applying for any night job I can work between the hours of 5pm and 5am 3-4 nights a week, during the day I take care of my child. I'v been focusing on bartending and serving since thats where my most recent experience is and its the few options I have for a night position. I'm not very articulate when it comes to writing so I am assuming there is something wrong with my resume'. I am looking for feed back on my resume below please. I welcome constructive criticism. Thank you. April
I have a 1 page, 12 pt. font center align, titles in bold underline and job title and dates in bold

TMI. Too much information. You only put your most recent and relevant work experience on a resume. You shouldn't put "stay at home mom." You shouldn't put why you left a job. You shouldn't describe your former work places.
You should describe your responsibilities and achievements. There are plenty of sites that have examples of good resumes. University/college websites often have these and are reliable.
Also, networking and actually speaking with potential employers will greatly enhance you job search. Don't just drop off a resume and wait for them to call you. Call them a couple days later, then again a week later. Just politely ask about opportunities and let them know you (a qualified candidate) are available.
There were also some typos/misspellings.

Nothing
There are thousand and thousands of talented, experience people on the street due to the economy…the competition for any job is extreme. …people will do anything for much less just to feed their kids……..I don’t expect it to get any better before 2012……sorry……

You should target your resume at each job you apply at, don't try and make a blanket resume to fit everybody, it makes you look desperate and you are not as likely to get what you want. Don't list stay at home mom as work experience it is not relevant to any of the jobs you are applying for. And maybe know the hours of operation for the places you are applying for at what hours they are looking for someone to work and discuss your specific needs at interviews, they may need to an hour before or after the times you listed and you may have disqualified yourself from the job just for that. Good luck!
