As a security guard can I carry a legal size knife on me without my employer knowing about it?

I work for security at a store and do NOT own a guard card, I bought a nice tactical (palm size) legal knife today, could I carry this on me as a tool and for self defense or would it possibly get the company in trouble with me not owning a guard card?

I would say carry as a 'tool'. When you say 'self defense' you are admitting intent if you stab someone. If you are on duty and use a weapon you weren't trained in using, you and you employer can be sued. gc

i would guess that your employer would have given you such a device if they thought that you would need it, or that they thought you would be responsible enough to know how to use it properly. I would either ask your employer, or just leave it at home.

You need to get your guard card. Not only can your employer get in trouble but you can also get into a lot of trouble as well. I don't think your employer will be angry if you are carrying a legal item for self defense, as long as it is legal and you use that item properly. Although it is best to ask your employer if your allowed to carry such items, b/c although you are just trying to defend yourself, your employer might see it otherwise b/c of liability issues.
