TA
Can a potential employer ask for a copy of my credit report?
Asked by TA
The job is an administrative assistant/office manager position.

NO. They can only offer you employment contingent on you passing the background check, which may include a credit report IF the position warrants it. You do not EVER give confidential information to anyone unless there is a job offer in the offing. In other words, they give you an offer letter saying they have selected you for the position, but this depends on you passing the drug screen and background check. AT THAT TIME you sign a consent form allowing them to do a check. They do NOT tell YOU to give them a copy of your credit report. The company pays for getting a copy. I can't believe how stupid the managers are these days, they don't even know the law. If you are not handling money or in a position of financial responsibility, which you are NOT in this position, they have no right to ask for a credit check at all. This is ONLY for financial positions in which you have access to the company's money. NOT because he's nosy about your credit!

A:
yes, for background chack

Depending on the laws where you are looking for work. Credit reporting and HIPPA laws dictate when information can be released. Any company that is looking at credit typically must have a valid reason to want this information. Some examples of validity include access to personal financial information, cash handling, compliance with trading and finance laws or a host of other reasons. Check with the laws in the area which you are looking for work.

Read the application you sign. It may state something to the effect that " I authorize XYZ company or its agents or representative to obtain any and all Information about me that it may determine to be warranted in order toverifyy my suitability for employment with this company." It's all there in the small print, and, yes they can if they decide they need this information.

A:
Yes they can ask for the credit copy with the fact that if they have you in charge of a company credit card or something like that, they want to see that you wouldn't use their card carelessly. This is one example. Other reasons may be if you're having to pay bills etc.

Yes, they can ask your permission for a background check and credit check. You can always refuse.... but that pretty much ends any chance of getting this job.

A:
For that position, yes they certainly can. In this position you will be doing some money handling like ordering supplies, processing invoices, and if its a service related company like a contractor you'll be receiving large payments from clients. However they should do it as a credit check rather than asking you to obtain a credit report.
