I have to learn Java programming? Will it be hard? Any pointers?
Asked by Aaron
I have never taken a programming class in my life, but I am an information systems major, and my major requires me to take a java programming class.
Although this class is a beginner class, it is a 300 level class and is only 10 weeks long and is meant for IT majors....I have heard that the professor is a terrible instructor, so I will basically be teaching myself.
For someone with no prior experience with programming how difficult can I expect this class to be?

If you're unfamiliar with object oriented programming (C#/C++/Jave/etc.), and the teacher's incompetent, it could be extremely difficult and confusing.
I would goto youtube and search for "Standford Programming Methodology", then watch the videos. Start with lecture 1. They will probably help you immensely. All of the lectures are online and the course is taught exclusively in Java. The professor is brilliant (it's Stanford, after all) and the class assumes you're going in knowing absolutely nothing about programming.

Object Oriented programming is really hard for some people. The concept it self is very confusing. There are very good books about object oriented programming out there so start reading. It will help once you go into the classroom. I used a lot of tutoring during my Java classes, use it if your school offers. Some people can explain better than others so tutors might be able to help you through better than the instructor. Just read the section over and over again. If you get stuck, use google to search like "JAVA create a String object" or "JAVA create a default constructor method" be specific and you will find tones of help out there in online community. Good Luck
