How can I make my resume look appealing to managers in the food service industry?
Asked by LC
I'm 21 and my resume and background is filled with administrative and desk job stuff, but seeing as jobs are somewhat limited, I want to make my resume more open to server/waitress jobs as well. What's the best way to do this?

Make sure your resume outlines the main qualifications that you DO have which can contribute to the new job. Get creative - but don't lie. There are a lot of transferable skills that fit no matter what job you have. Check out the link below and it will give you some great ideas.

I review applications at a restaurant I work at. I see a lot come across my desk from those who have been laid off in auto manufacturing and those who are out of work from their office jobs. These people are typically considered. You may also want to see if an area community college or community education center of some sort offers a hospitality or restaurant class/ certificate. I know in my area a hospitality program is available. Also, you should consider a ServSafe or TIPS certification.

Customer service is a must. You should put an emphases on how well you can work with others. Make it known that you have a desire to be a great asset to the team and how good you are at communication. If you have had any experience in sales, focus on that too.
