What is the training and pay like for an EMT-basic?
Asked by Adam M
I need a job and have a little money for training. I received some medical training while in the military and can put it to better use as an EMT.
I don't want to become a paramedic. Just an EMT-basic.
How much pay does an EMT-basic get? I don't need much money.
How long is training? How much is tuition for training?

Training is usually about 4-6 months and costs around 400-600 dollars. Depending on your state, most start off at about 9 dollars an hour. Unless you have significant firefighting experience don't expect to get hired at a dept. doing "911" calls. Chances are, you'll start working for a transport service that takes nursing home patients to doctor appts. Some EMTs work in the ER and make a little more money, but they are usually cross-trained to draw blood and do EKGs, as well. None the less, EMT training is a great thing to have, whatever you do with it!

The pay will vary greatly on where you live and because you won't have an experience at first it will be lower. The norm in LA and FL is about $9 -$10 an hour. In this field the opportunity for overtime is practically endless, so if you don't mind putting in the hours the pay can be pretty good. You get time and a half for anything over 40 hours a week. The program is usually 1 semester or about 3 months for a Basic although some states have accelerated programs. I really cannot recall how much I paid for my training but I know with testing and all it was not over $1,000. I know you probably are not in Louisiana but check out this site for more info. on the career and how long it takes and what to expect. http://nationalemsacademy.com/basic.html
