Welders: what is the job market like?
Asked by Nad _
If I was to take out a loan to pay for some community college welding courses and then get a certification, whats the chances of me being able to get a job? I really like this prospect, but I don't want to be stuck with a loan I can't pay back. All the career description sites says there is a huge demand for welders, but if you search the online job boards, I'm just not seeing the demand.

Don't do it...I spent twenty years working as a T.I.G welder, got made redundant and decided on a career change. Best thing that ever happened...I didn't realise how much the job was killing me, breathing in mucky, horrible crap in fumes, grinding dust and god knows what is good for no-one. I wouldn't recommend the job to anyone.

I'm not a certified welder but I almost took a course at a community college to become one but I'll probably take it later at a cheaper place. I've seen in the newspaper where the classifieds are that a few places needed some welders. A job will for sure come around, especially with construction going on somewhere.
