What do you think is more practical for business, sociology or psychology?
Asked by Dondeep
I'm a high school graduate who is choosing courses to take at Georgetown. I want to go into business once I graduate from college. I also plan on going to a business grad school. I'm going to major in Economics and I was looking to double major or minor in sociology or psychology. I don't know what I want to do yet in business, but which major do you think is more practical to have for a business type job?

The study of economics, sociology, and psychology are all relevant for a general career in business. The choice between sociology and psychology for the minor is really more about your interests as neither is more or less practical.
Both study human behavior and interaction, though sociology tends to focus more on understanding individuals as part of groups while psychology focuses more on individual cognition. Sociology is beneficial for market research, quantitative analysis of data, human resources, organizational behavior, and general management. Psychology is useful for organizational psychology, behavioral, cognitive, and biological approaches to understanding individual actions.
There is much overlap between the two. In my opinion, take classes in both disciplines and go with whichever you enjoy the most.
A:
Industrial/Organizational Psychology.
However I would focus on getting your first two years of pre-reqs out of the way.

Since you are going to be majoring in Economics, I would take Psychology. As first posted, that can lead you into Industrial/Organizational Psychology and it also opens up Behavioral Economics, which is a very important and fast growing field of study.
