A college degree will not change your salary. The FAA sometimes opens the register to off the street candidates, and I believe that may be the case at the moment or will be in the near future and typically the requirement is that you pass the AT-SAT test, successfully complete training, and are able to do the job (how's that for a unique concept!). There are also combinations of work experience/education that must be met, but if things haven't changed, a degree is not specifically required. If you decided to go the CTI route, go to an FAA approved CTI College or University. After that you must still receive a passing score on the Air Traffic Selection & Training (AT-SAT) test and successfully complete training. In a CTI school, they will take care of directing you into the appropriate subjects.
BTW, thinking about maybe being an air traffic controller just "ain't gonna get it" in that world. You need to really WANT to be an air traffic controller or you'll never survive the training.
Been there, done that and retired after 27 years.
