Can a dental hygienist apply for dental assistant jobs?

Dental Hygiene and Dental assisting are two fields that interest me. I was just curious, can a dental hygienist apply for dental assisting jobs? I'd probably stick with dental hygiene, but I see so many dental assisting jobs in the paper (more than I do for DH) so I was just curious if I could apply to those as well?

Yes, but a Registered Dental Hygienist would be way over-qualified for an assistant job. It is usually more of a transitional job, like while you are in school for DH, or while you wait to be accepted into a DH program, which is why you are probably seeing more ads for these jobs. The pay isn't great and many people only do it for a short amount of time so there is a high turnover rate.
