It is so untrue that massage therapy is a career for old people; most of the therapists I know are in their mid 20's. The older massage therapists I know do nothing but complain about how hard massage is on their bodies, because it is very physical work. By then they've already screwed themselves up doing other work for so many years.
I say do both. Massage school is shorter than a bachelor's degree, and once you get certified you have a good way to earn money to put yourself through college for interior design. It beats waiting tables or doing work-study. And with massage you can almost always set your hours and work as little or as much as you like, work around another job, a family, etc.

There aren't any qualifications to become a massage therapist except for a high school diploma and then going to massage school for the amount of time that your state requires.
Massage schools are really geared toward teaching older adults and not really for people right out of high school. I would go to Canada and take one of their 3-4 year training programs if you really want to do it right.
