To be a registered nurse, you usually need to complete a 4-year-long Bachelor degree at uni or college. You may also complete your master's degree if you wish.
In some countries, midwives need to complete a different course to work in that field.
These are the personal requirements of being a nurse, according to job guide 2008 for NSW/ACT Australia (book):
-good communication skills
-able to assume responsibility and a leadership role
-tolerance, patience and tact in dealing with people from a wide range of backgrounds and cultures
-able to work as part of a team
-mentally and physically fit
As a nurse, expect no two days to be the same. Many people find this to be a rewarding career because as a nurse you actively help people. Plus, there is a high demand for nurses so it is usually easy to find a job!

Bare minimum is an ASN (Associate of Science in Nursing). A lot of nurses have a BSN, which is advisable if you are just starting out and not making a career change.

I would get the associates degree first because you can always get a bachelor degree later.
Type in "nursing sucks" or "I hate being a nurse" in google and you'll find hundreds of nurses who HATE their job. You should hear their testimonials.
I read that it's hard to get a nursing job without experience, just like most professions.
