tech jobs are not drying up. My husband and I are moving to Nashville Friday. We are both pharmacy technicians, we had MULTIPLE job offers. Together we will be making $1250 more per month.
Maybe the other answerer is just not a good technician?
You do not need to go to a school to be a pharmacy technician. I did not go to one, and I get paid well, and have been a tech for 8 years.
States usually do not have tests, but you might have to fill out some forms and pay a fee to get your individual state licensures.
I have a PTCB certification (CPhT) as well as a TN and KY state lecenses.
Study for and take the PTCB certification exam. Upon passing, you will be a CPhT. The test is super easy. I would suggest getting a job at a hospital in the pharmacy. They pay far better than retail pharmacies. You get to see lots of neat stuff and the benefits are usually awesome.
Pharmacy tech for 8 years. CPhT for 5 years.

Hopefully you can find a program at any number of colleges, techs or universities. You do need to graduate from an accredited program and pass the state exam to get your certificate. I highly recommend you take some prerequisites before applying for the program. English 101, chemistry, etc.

Keep asking around, although they are not just blowing you off by saying that they are not hiring. Tech jobs are drying up like you wouldn't believe! I have been a tech for about 3 months, and I have been given advance notice that I will be "downsized" in 2 weeks!
