What could I do to increase my chanses of becoming a Paramedic/Firefighter?
Asked by Firefighter03
I want to be a Firefighter/Paramedic and I know its a hard job to get into and to do. I want to do everything I can to help get me in to the job and raise my pay scale. Will a masters degree help? Tell me what I should do, in order, to become a Paramedic/Firefighter with a high pay and good chance of promotion.

We definitely need more of these. My husband is currently an EMT/Firefighter, he is going for his paramedic. First, I would sign up for college classes. You need to take the EMT program first, before you can become a paramedic. Also, I suggest taking Firefighter 1 & 2 programs. Speak to a local fire department to find out where they suggest you take these. After you pass the EMT, then you can apply for the paramedic program (which can be pretty competitive) and become a paramedic. Most places will hire you as an EMT, and I suggest working as an EMT first, which will help you get some on the job training and experience before taking the paramedic course. Also, you may find a company that will pay for the paramedic course for you, if you sign on to work for them for a few years. Do some research on your local school, see what classes they have in the Allied Health area. They may or may not have the paramedic program. Any more questions, just ask!!
