How much should a private cook get paid hourly?
Asked by Starless
I just got offered a job to be a private COOK (I'm not a chef, but I am going to culinary school) twice a week for a couple. Dinner only. They will pay AND do the grocery shopping. All I will be doing is planning the menu and cooking. I just don't know how much I should charge them for the labor and the couple hours I will be spending in the kitchen? Any ideas????! Thanks!

Hi, I'm a personal chef too. I love it! It is hard to tell you what to charge, because there is a lot that depends on this. Your location, your experience, your clients, for example another person answered $25/hour. Well, what if your clients can't afford that? What if they aren't looking for the latest and greatest culinary masterpiece from you every night. They want simple meals, they have all the shopping done for you.....
I guess what I am saying is that I think being your first job, still a student, maybe you can ask them what they are looking for as for a budget. If they say $100/ week. Then you have a decision to make. If they say $50/ week, then you can say, I was looking for $80.
In my experience, area has a big play on what you charge. This is a great opportunity to learn and gain more clientele, I would hate for you to miss out on more opportunities if you set your hourly wage too high in the beginning of your career.
I hope this helps, and I wish you the best of luck in your schooling and career.

$15-$20 per hour depending on how good your food is. If your food makes them wet their pants, $25 per hour.
