Career Questions and Answers
What are some career opportunities that don't require college education?
Asked by No Cookies for You
I've considered truck driving but I don't think I would enjoy it. I honestly think I have the skills to run a business but there aren't many banks out there that would lend an 18 year old a couple hundred-thousand dollars. I don't mind physical labor as long as it doesn't demand a tremendous amount of strength (I have a hard time building muscle) though I'd prefer a job that makes me think. I'm looking for responses from people who have built a career without receiving a college education.

What about package handling? UPS and FedEx offer great careers, but these usually start in the package handling sector.
My father was a trucker for 20 years- it took a lot out of him, but he did make a lot of money (over $60,000 per year).
Are you good with computers, and have strong communication skills? Contact a local temp agency and see if you can get administrative work, or data entry. Most of these jobs (They are a bit over-staffed at this time, but it's still a good place to check) are in nice offices, and offer a 9-to-5 schedule.
Or, if you're great with money and don't mind taking some really hard tests, you can see about becoming a Financial Adviser. You do not need a college education for this, however, you have to be willing to find clients, and pass some really hard financial tests (Series 6/63). My father does this now, and there is great income potential if you are with a reputable company.

You're right - no one is going to lend you so much as $1000 to start a biz without extensive business experience under your belt.
There are a number of decent trade and technician-type of jobs that only require an associate's degree from a community college. Take a look at their offerings to see what might interest you.
Without an education & training - at least an AA - the jobs open to you are fast food, and other minimum wage jobs. These are not careers. They are not even survivable. Even truck driving requires that you go to a truck driving training school to get your licenses.

Get off your butt and go to college. A local community college will cost around $20,000 for all four years. You can easily make that back with a job you can get as a result of having a college education.
If you actually had any chance of running your own business you would already know that.
Get a day job, make some money, figure out what you want to do. Then do it.
