Question about outsourcing?
Asked by green_e_zeleno
I was recently hired (in the US) in a very large international financial institution as a developer/programmer. I am working with 2 other developers in India. My manager tells me that our team's services will be expanding and we will be adding more people to our team...in India. This worries me a bit because I am the only tech person based in the US (besides the technical lead). I am curious as to why they hired me at all then?? Is it possible that they want to use me more of as a production support person (of the product that we're responsible for)? I'm a bit worried that if I don't work 24/7 like the Indians do for a quarter of my salary, I'll be out of a job. Any ideas?

Generally, the work performed in emerging economies requires a lower skill set then in developed countries. Think of your staff in India as augmenting your own skills.
There are lots of helpful websites with advice on managing outsourcing relationships. So long as good governance is in place you should be able to work well together and get through disputes quickly. Perhaps you’ll even get a pay rise for being responsible for more staff and delivering the project faster because of those extra low(ish) cost staff.

Generally in outsourcing they still need at least one person over here. Because the people in India have no idea of our needs over here and often, unless there is one person over here to sort out mis-understandings, the job will never get done. You may be that person. You will not be doing any of the actual coding. You are the interface between the application here and the team there.
