The Oregon Kid
Becoming a Project Manager?
Asked by The Oregon Kid
I am a 28 year old railroad employee who just finished his bachelors in Business Management. I am strongly considering returning to school to obtain a graduate certificate in project management and my PMI certification. While I am an extremely fast learner and an intelligent individual, I don't know how to obtain the vocational experience needed to enter particular fields of project management. Construction project management interests me the most, however I have no experience with building or construction. I am afraid that I will spend even more money on education that will not result in me obtaining a position as a project manager in construction or any other field. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

Now is a bad time to change jobs. Other wise I would say that a BA in business management should get you in to a entry level PM job. With the job market the way it is the PMI will really help. Look for work if you find it with out the PMI great other wise start working on it while you are looking. Construction PM may be different. I knew in home building they want the PM's to have a construction background, commercial may be different. I PM on the IT, and software side, note I do not have the PMI, but I do have 20 years of experience. Pay is good, I would say go for it. Good luck
