Would babysitting be a good job? How do you become a babysitter?
Asked by Alice
I'm kind of out of options at this point. I'm a high school graduate with no job experience and I need a job. How do you advertise your babysitting? What makes a "good" babysitter? What to do/ not do? How much should a babysitter charge?

Jobs for "au pairs" are everywhere. You have options in most countries and generally you can get a visa fairly easily. A friend of mine just finished a 5 month babysitting job for a rich family on a beach in Malaysia. Have a search on the Internet for this. In terms of local work. Networking is key. get yourself noticed anyway you can. Have you thought of housesitting also?

A:
Alice - I don't know about babysitting, except to make some flyers and distribute them in your neighborhood and surrounding areas. I suggest looking at your State, County, and local cities websites for their job openings

Get CPR and first aid certified. The Red Cross offers classes for this. Advertise in the newspaper and on criaislist. See if you can put up fliers at pediatricians' offices, schools, and churches. Talk to parents in grocery stores, the mall, or the library. Good babysitters have fun with the kids, but can be firm when necessary. They clean up the dishes after meals they've prepared/served. They respect the parents' wishes. They don't bring guys or friends to the houses, nor do they spend all their time on the phone. Ask other sitters and parents in the area what they charge. People in NYC would pay a lot more for a sitter than in Podunk, WI. Good luck!
