Career Questions and Answers

My husband is in the construction industry (carpentry). With the industry so slow, should he change careers?
Asked by Jenna
He has been laid off for 2 months. Everything we hear and read seems to indicate that the construction industry will be slow for at least the next 2-3 years. Should my husband think about changing careers? He's been in his trade for 10 years and loves it, but we're trying to make the best choice for our family. He is a union carpenter.

Resumes usually are Job Specific. You should really focus on employment history geared toward that specific job. Have separate resumes for your job experience if they do not relate. Here's a link just read it and see if gives you helpful hints. http://hotjobscorner.blogspot.com/

hell no. People in trades will ALWAYS find job. maybe he can't get a steady one, but he'll always be able to do sidejobs. Is he union? That makes a huge difference too.

Well it depends on where you live. If he likes construction and using his hands he might look into refinery work(my area of work) GREAT pay excellent benefits and most important lob security. Refinery jobs are kind of competitive to get into but well worth it.

Sometimes we have to do what is in the best interest of our families,,,there a lot of folk that work jobs they don't like,,,it's the few lucky ones that have jobs they like and can support their families. He could look for something in the related field that pays on a regular basis and when the construction work opens back up perhaps he could make the jump back in or at least with the construction related job, blend the two.

he will have to get job training or education to get a job in any other field - when he is working - you need to learn to live on less than he brings home in his paycheck and to save a lot of money to tide you over the periods of unemployment and he will always have periods of unemployment in that industry
