I want to be a Clinical Laboratory Technician?
Asked by olinb84
I plan on taking a class for Laboratory Technician Assistant and I was curious if hospitals that employ this position do internal education/on the job training that would allow me to become a higher level such as a Clinical Laboratory Technician or higher, does anyone know if they do this or is it all have to be done at a college?

To work as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) you must have at least a 2-year associates degree in medical laboratory technology and the MLT (ASCP) certification through the American Society for Clinical Pathology. Medical Technologists/Clinical Laboratory Scientists must have at least a 4-year BS degree and the MT (ASCP) certification. Usually clinical rotations are also completed in each department for either level. You'll only need a high school diploma to work as a laboratory assistant or clerk and they will train on-the-job for these positions.
