How easy is it to get a job as an architect?
Asked by Fhoxx
I'm going to be a senior in high school this year. I've had cad classes since sophomore year, and am Nocti Certified in the use of the autocad program. ( Job ready ) And am wondering how hard///easy it is to find work as an architect, autocad drafter, or something along those lines.

It has been my experience that it is very difficult to get a job as an architect or related support position (drafter, designer, etc), mainly because the field is highly competitive. For a long time, there have been far more people looking for work in architecture than there have been available positions. That is one of the reasons why I became disenchanted with the architectural field and left it almost twenty years ago.
To work as an architect, you will need to earn a bachelors or masters degree in architecture, and pass the NCARB exam. You should attend a college that offers a good architecture program, and, ideally, spend your summers working in an architect's office (whether or not for college internship credit). The fact that you have proficiency in Autocad is a big plus, and should help you tremendously in your job search. You can probably work as a CAD drafter without going to college, but you will need to get a degree if you want to advance to an architect.
I wish you luck.
