depending on the size of the hotel, they may do more or less then some..
i have worked in larger and smaller hotels and I check people in and out, answer phone calls about the hotel, take reservation of rooms and groups and meeting rooms , answer question about the town the hotel is in, like what to do..
I help the guests that are in the hotel with things, like towels and things for their rooms, to food and finding cab rides and once called 911 for someone and called the cops on others.
make sure no one is drowning in the pool or throwing things in it and making sure the whole hotel is ok and safe on my shift.
and doing this while I do all my paper work for the front desk..
I love my job..

Front Desk Receptionists, some times referred to as the concierge deal with customer service. They book rooms for guests, make sure that the rooms have all the amenities requested, set up reservations to restaurants [not all but some do], give references to things to do around the hotel's city/area, answer phones, etc. It is LARGELY based on customer service so you need to be prepared for all kinds of customers, especially ones who are dissatisfied no matter what. Hope this helps!

Mostly you have to stand.. it is a standing job, you have to be smiling all the time and sharp,
Greet the guest with a smile and make him/her feel they are the only guest in the hotel.
