Correction officer advice?
Asked by F
I wanna become a corrections officer. I served in the US military, discharged honorable. I havent applied at any local jails but im moving to Orlando FL in January and im guessing that my best priority would be to join the correction officer academy?
What should I expect in the academy? What should I expect in the real world as a correction officer?
Thanks

Life as a correction officer.
You deal with scum low life's all the time everyday. They will hit you spit on you, throw piss and crap on you, and may even try to kill you.
If anything happens you will be blamed or at fault as the scum low life doing time would never do anything wrong.
If you treat the inmates with respect, they will take you as a sucker and really mess with you. If you are a hardass you will be get complaints and written up.
All this for 30K a year.
There are two types that do this job, people that are unable to do anything else and this is as good of a job they will ever have, or people looking to be cops but can't pass the entry test and hope this will get them in the door.
Good luck to you.

Former Correctional Officer.
I never had to attend any sort of academy. It was just a matter of filling out a long application form stating all past employers and experiences and so on.
Took a 500 question test that measures your mental capabilities and what to do if you were in different predicaments while dealing with inmates. And of course, a thorough back-ground check and finally, the interview.
Whatever you do, try not to work in a juvenile facility. It's like working with a bunch of 'wild' animals who could careless about following orders because they think they know a whole more then everyone else. Yes, even more than the officers themselves.
When I first started, I had to knock a few violent individuals down as they were charging me trying to test all new officers as they normally do. Haha...idiots didn't know I was a 3rd degree black belt and well-trained to defend myself with no problems.
Hey, good luck.
btw, I got out after only about 3 years. I just couldn't see myself working in an environment like that for the rest of my career. I am currently in the process of becoming a game warden.
*Also I might add that you will have a very good chance of being accepted into the academy or whatever, as you clearly have the military background. The states loves hiring former military guys for their loyalties and patriotic mentalities. I was one, but not allowed to disclosed which branch or my job classification.

Just watch Shaw-shank Redemption and the Green Mile. Then expect a cross between the two movies.
