You should find out their rank and reputation in their industry segment, as well as their financial situation (profit/loss and stock price history, etc.). If they are publicly-held companies you should be able to find this information online through a service like Dunn and Bradstreet. Are they expanding their market share or is it contracting? Are they in a cyclical (boom/bust) business sector? Who are their major customers and who are their major competitors? You should find out the organizational structure of the company, i.e., is it a conglomerate that has lots of relatively unrelated divisions or is it a monolithic company that specializes in a few specific areas. How do they treat their employees? What do their current and former employees think about them? Have they had large layoffs in the past? Do they do a lot of outsourcing of jobs? You should also research through Money Magazine or other periodicals that publish lists of best companies to work for: http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortune/bestcompanies/2009/full_list/ This kind of background information is good to use as a way of selecting which companies to interview with and which job offer to choose if you have more than one. Of course, many people only stay with their first company a couple of years so use some judgment about how much effort to put into this research. When I graduated it was during a recession and I only got one job offer. Luckily it was with an excellent company but I only stayed 2 years before I found another job I liked better. Good luck!
