Can somebody who has experience as a vet tech please tell me about the pros and cons of the job?
Asked by dwyllwyd
Any information would be great! I am considering going back to school to become a vet tech and would like to make sure that this is really what I want to do. I love animals and feel like this career would be very rewarding for me. Thank you!

I had a friend who did this, and know many in the field. Here are the Pros: You get to work with animals, help them, care for them, treat them, gain experience, knowledge, compassion, and work with professionals in the field. Here are the Cons: You will be cleaning up poop, pee, and barf (better than cleaning up after a baby though), you will see blood, and you will see bad injuries, you will hear the animals whimper, cry, injured, diseased, and dying. It will hurt you to the core. The trade off: It will be YOU giving of yourself and your time. It will be YOU that the animals will bond with, and grow to trust. It will be YOU that others will eventually trust, and ask advice from. It will be YOU helping animals. You must have alot of compassion and love for animals. You have to have a strong side about you as well, or you will be ill and saddened every day. But you will be doing a wonderful service for the animals, and that in itself will also bring unexpected joy. Especially if you have love and patience for them.

If you can stand blood and guts and putting down sick or badly injured animals, you will be ok. You also will have to deal with animal behavior such as vicious dogs and unruly cats and any other animal the vet will treat. This is not a sugar coated jor or for the faint of heart job. You are the doctors right hand person and will be doing a lot of treatments under the doctors orders. I am talking from experience before I became a business owner.
