How is it legal to force someone to join a union?
Asked by mts4life2000
Asked in the context of teachers union. My local school district will not hire you if you will not join the union. Is it legal for them NOT to hire you based on your unwillingness to join the union regardless of your qualifications? It seems like a form of discrimination.

Welcome to the world of Unions. Some states are Right to work states and you do not have to join the union. Most of those are in the south. However if you are in the North then you get to enjoy your union. I HATE UNIONS

Technically, you do not have to 'join' the union. But since you will be enjoying the same benefits & wages fought for & won by the union at your job setting, you must pay a 'fee', which turns out to be the same amount as union dues. The labor contract between the school district and union spells it out. It is legally binding.

You need to look up the definition of discrimination. This isn't. Some states are what's called right to work states - in those you can't be required to join a union. In other states, if you want to work for an employer with a union contract, you have to join or at least pay the union dues.
