How does one go about picking a career?
Asked by Richmond Faithfull
I have no idea what I want to do in life after I finish school, I'm thinking about trying for an apprenticeship but I'm completely lost. I am interested in becoming a automotive mechanic or a carpenter but know nothing about the profession

Well, I think you are off to a good start as you know what you are interested in doing. There are a few things now to consider: 1) Find some people in those professions and arrange work experience with them so you can get an idea as to what each job is about. Your school may be able to help arrange this. 2) Contact TAFE in your area and see if they can provide you with any info. 3) REALLY think about what you can picture yourself doing day in and day out for the rest of your life! Think about what you you would do with your life if you had the choice of doing absolutely anything. Not that you can't change your mind down the track, but wouldn't it be great to find something you love from the beginning of your working life. (I started my working life - many many moons ago, in Banking and finace. I have been a stay at home mum for 4 and a half years and I have just enrolled in uni to do education! talk about a change...) Anyway, best of luck to you. And well done you for putting the time into thinking about it!!!
