How do I become a nurse while working full time?
Asked by xsnudgex
I am starting a full time job as a care assistant in a nursing home (UK) but I also want to train to be a nurse, can this be done while im working? Does anyone in the UK know how I go about doing this?

Some universities provide part time pre-registration nursing programmes which last about 5-6 years, but only if you are an NHS employee and have a NVQ level 3 (or equivalent). If your nursing home is NHS run, you can discuss being put forward by your manager. There is also the option of cutting your hours and only work evenings or weekends and doing full-time study instead. You would receive a monthly bursary to help support you financially while you complete the course.

If your employer is any good they will help you to fulfil your ambition. I supported a large number of care assistants to undertake their nurse training and most came back to work for us after and were brilliant registered nurses. You might want to speak to your local college of nursing and ask them about part time and seconded training packages.
