As an asthmatic, would it be stupid of me to work in a science lab?
Asked by nerdinpink
I have asthma and sometimes chemical smells trigger an attack. Last night for example I had an attack during a lab in Chemistry I (it involved burning sulfur with copper and hydrochloric acid mixed with zinc). I love science and was planning on transferring into a forensic science program; would that be a bad idea?

Normally experiments which give off a pungent smell are done under a fumehood. Even in industry the area should be well ventilated so as not to cause irritation although having said that if you are too sensitive to odours then yes it might be a problem for you because you have to work hours in these environments. It also depends if you want to work in a chemistry related field because now you want to work in forensic science (?).

No. I think that if you have a passion for something, you shouldn't let inconvenient obstacles get in the way. However, do take a break before you get severe attacks every single day. Haha, but I'm sure you know that. Also, you could wear a mask (think the "Swine Flu/H1N1" masks) to filter the toxic fumes so that an asthma attack would be less likely to happen (if you don't mind how you'll look).
Anyway, I hope that helped!

Absolutely not stupid. In school you will have to do all sorts of experiments but I never saw anyone burning sulfur on NCIS.
Dutch or European law, currently in the making, is that an employer will have to make the environment so that employees are protected as much as possible against developing allergies. Like dust particles or paint fumes.
If you are passionate and good at your job, first off it is possible that you will have few causes for attacks on your job. And second, for such a good employee, I would expect the employer to try and find a way to work around your sensitivities.
