For a blue-collar job, yes. Welding is a good skill to have. If you are a certified welder, and are in the right business you can make a very good living. For instance, working in a boatyard or construction in welding positions you probably will make very good living. If you are just a welder working in a average factory with little or no certification or skills then you still might make a decent salary, but nothing to brag about.
It really all depends on what you want to put into it, and what kind of welding you are speaking of. I was making around $17 a hour 10 years ago as a robotic welder. Running a CNC robot which did the welding.
On the other hand i know guys who are doing welding in fly by night shops who are busting their butts for 8-9 dollars a hour.
One other thing, welding can be a dirty and hard job at times. Its hard on your eyes and on your lungs. With the right equipment you will be ok, but alot of fly by night companies dont want to supply their employees with the right equipment.

welders actually make a decent amount...and you can move up from being a welder. the vice president or something like that of my company i work for, northrop grumman, was a welder. at least 20 bucks an hour...pending on where you work

It depends on how good you are and how dangerous the job is. Production welders are in the 20-25/hr range but undersea welder make more. The St.Louis Arch is an all welded structure as is the Alaska pipeline. There is hazard pay if you are willing to do it. Another possibility is being a pipe fitter. They have to be certified in welding too. Race care chassis builders, marine repair, the list is endless for someone who can do the job and wants to work.
Look into it and see what is out there.

as a piping superintendent who works mostly in the middle east, i can tell you YES.
it depends on YOU.
if you can only mig weld ( with a wire feed gun) you will not make much.
if you can arc weld, carbon steel on structures, you make a little more, about 20/hr.
if you can weld pipe, carbon steel, about 20-24/hr.
if you can weld carbon steel pipe and alloys (like stainless steel, 2 1/4%.. 5% ,,,and 9% chrome, inkonel, monel, etc..) then it's about 24-28/hr.
another thing,,,,,again, depending on you, you can take courses for welding inspecting....which pays much more and is in demand all over the world.
to clarify an earlier post,,,in most places, pipefitters do NOT need to learn how to weld. some shipyards require this, but there is not much money in the shipyards, or rail yards, or junk yards, or things of that nature,,,,stay in refineries, petrochemical plants, industrial processing plants....the maintenance depts. of these facilities pay a little less than NEW construction, so learn the skill and get on with a constr. company...good luck !!!
