Suggestions/Feedback on which job to take, Federal Aviation Administration versus Burlington Northern railroad?
Asked by julianne_michelle
I have two job offers, one from FAA and one from BNSF and I dont know which to take. The pay is comparable for both, and the benefits seem to be comparable for both. If anyone has any insight as to which you think is better working for the government or railroad?

Depends on your situation and risk tolerance. FAA is a US gov't job. It's going to be pretty safe, and the pension is probably good, if you stay that long. BNSF is one of the few railroads making a profit, because they do a lot of freight. That will improve over the next few years, but you will always be at risk if the economy tanks again. If you're just out of school with no dependents, BNSF will give you valuable industry experience and if you save up a safety net, the economic risk is small. But if you've got any dependents, FAA is a safe paycheck and you will still get some good experience. Congrats on two offers!

I think BNSF is best only because they're a publicly traded company which could provide you more room for growth and stock in the company. The FAA is plagued with issues.
