What is Previous outside sales experience?
Asked by datonebull
I'm thinking of applying for a job after i graduate with a bachelors degree in finance and the job says 3 years of outside sales experience. I have some experience in sales but not in the financial industry. I have sold things out of retail stores such as flooring and appliances as a specialist. Do you think they will count this or should look to gain more experience before applying?

There are two basic types of sales positions. Inside sales - They only deal with customers over the phone, usually just taking orders from people that already have a history of doing business with you. Outside sales - Meet with customers face-to-face and develop new customers. Since you have experience dealing directly with customers face-to-face, you have some experience. However, a true outside sales person works outside of the office. They are on the road with little or no direct supervision so you have to be self-motivated and goal-orientated. (note: use these two terms on your resume and during any interviews). Good luck!

I'd think that any relevant experience is acceptable in sales. Really, if your just coming out of college then they might be interested to teach you if your the right kind of personality. That isn't to say that they might insist on real sales experience. Depends. I mean Pharmaceutical sales people come out of college. But if this is a sales job you have to put your best foot forward, try. Business is about making contacts and they will appreciate your inquiry.

You have low-level retail sales experience is all. This bears NO relation to what this company is looking for! Outside sales is often corporate sales. You go to the customer's company. It's high-end sales, problem solving, and above all, building relationships with corporate clients. Examples would be pharmaceutical sales to hospitals, doctors offices and other medical facilities. High-end copiers and office equipment. Building security systems. Pension fund management services for corporate pension plans. If the job listing says 3 yrs outside sales experience required, you better believe that you need to sell your ability to sell! You need a serious track record in sales to bother applying. Do not waste their time or yours since they want someone who can sell millions of dollars of product/services per year.
