Help finding a job in Houston!!?
Asked by lulubelle
ok. my dad was hit by lightning about 1 year and a half ago(thank God he didn't die) and he has not had a job since and when he was working he did mechanic work and inspections and stuff...then he had a heat stroke ..so he can't work outside anymore.
when he got hit by lightning he could not talk clearly without studdering for about a year ....but he can talk fine now.
his bodily temp. was really out of wack (95 degrees and he was wearing a heavy coat!) he was not able to go to a doctor either.
he is 40 years old and just went back to high school and got his high school diploma ; we have been living with his sister and she lives on disability ..she just got a heart transplant. Can anyone PLEASE! help us out and give us any ideas of what he could do?
1. he's great with people.
2.he has a desire to learn.
3. he has owned and operated his own car maintenance and detailing business before.
4.his job history is not that great(a lot of past employers wanted him to do illegal inspections that he would not do)
5.he loves to cook.
6.he has been I single parent since I was 3 (15 now) with out any help from my mother who is a felon.
7. he has two twin daughters ,my sister and I.
and we would love so much to move out of my aunt's house into an apartment of our own :)

Try using the Texas Job Center: http://txjobs.onlinecityguides.com

If your dad is unemployed and wants to be retrained, the unemployment office will pay for his retraining. If he wants to get into some office training that would be good or something with computers therefore he wouldn't have to work outside. But it doesn't have to be in computers, the employment office has many different training schools. Also you can look up work on the following websites:
www.snagajob.com
www.careerbulder.com
www.hotjobs.com
www.monsterjobs.com
www.dice.com
www.craigslist.org
Good luck

I would suggest your dad contact the Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services. They are a state agency that helps people with disabilities who are no longer able to work at their previous jobs. They have training and job placement services, and may help with your aunt as well. Find them on the internet at www.dars.state.tx.us.
I don't know many people who have actually gotten jobs through the Texas Workforce Commission, and since your dad has some issues, DARS would be a better place for him to start.
