Why is the customer always WRONG?
Asked by Ashley Buttercup
I am so sick of doing customer service jobs! I am 30 years old with a college degree, yet I'm stuck serving the public.
Earlier today I was giving tours of a green and smart house. Mind you I am a very intelligent tour guide. The group I had was dead, unenthusiastic and looked at me as if I was just there to serve them as a TV or something. I was talking about the benefits of a green roof, and how this particular green roof in our home at the museum has low-maintenance weeds, meaning you never have to worry about tending to them- nature and the rain to it for you.
This one smart-ass male guest said in front of me and everyone, "Ha- but they're weeds! Of course they're low maintenance weeds. What you said makes so sense." Everyone laughed. Wow! So before as I'm talking on the tour, no one says a thing. Now because this wise ass wants to make a statement, they laugh. I said "Sir, these are a different type- flowers and plants mixed in." He said "Okay, but it still doesn't make sense the way you put it dude." Oh that did it. I was so angry I decided to snap back "Sir, who's giving this tour? Me, or the douche who has an annoying wife and kid? Shut the hell up or leave the tour!" (He had an annoying wife and child with him). The group gasped in shock.
After my tour, so many people came up to me saying how rude I was. I told each one the same thing: "I do not tolerate rudeness. He was rude. Earlier when I was giving all of you tons and TONS of house information, you could care less. But now you want to say something." They still shook their heads. Luckily I wasn't fired, but was spoken to by a supervisor.
Why did this happen to me? AND Please be honest and not judgemental. I understand as tour guides I'm in the customer service field, but if a guest is rude and disruptive like that, I stand up for myself. We as guides work long hours, and very hard. Yet guys like him look down on us. Why?

Some people never learned respect. Individuals who have never worked customer service jobs don't realize how difficult it can be. You; however, were definitely in the wrong and you're lucky you weren't fired on the spot (If I were the manager, I would have) because of the image you gave of the company you work for. You could have simply told the guy, "I'm sorry you feel that way" and continued with your tour. Instead, you took the immature and unprofessional way and argued with him. If you don't want to continue with customer service jobs, get an entry-level job elsewhere ~ lifes too short to hate your job.

I'm surprised you WEREN'T fire on the spot
all those people will tell other people about how rude you were and it probably WILL NEGATIVELY affect business - you might lose your job that way if not from getting fired outright for being an idiot.
if you can't maintain your cool in a job like that - you need to get a job that does NOT deal directly with the public - something like a garbageman or sewer worker
I probably would have fired you - you may still get fired and if you do get fired, you might not qualify for unemployment because you acted like a buttheaded Nazi
