The three most important qualities of as supervisor are people skills, organization skills, and execution skills.
People skills involve motivating people to work: typically by seeing to it that they know what they are supposed to do and have the tools and training to get the job done. Help out where you have to, but do not do the job for the person. Be fair and don't play favorites. You don't have to be liked to be a good supervisor; you need to be fair and consistent.
Be quick to praise but not hesitant to talk to a person whose performance is not up to standard. Do the latter in private, and concentrate on the activity and not the person. Don't make any assumptions about the personality. E.g "Your production levels are below standard." NOT "You're goofing off or are lazy."
The second part involves organization. You'll need to see the big picture and make sure things are in place so people aren't waiting around for parts or information nor are they overwhelmed with work. You may have to move people from job to job to balance the workload.
As for execution skills, your mission is to get the job done. Do what this takes within safe, legal, and ethical limits. Lead by example. You cannot expect your charges to do anything you haven't demonstrated that you are not willing to do yourself.
