Are there electrical engineering jobs that are not behind a desk and that have adventure?
Most design is done at a desk. Work is done in "the field". The best way to use your engineering knowledge and not be "behind a desk" is to be involved in "Project commissioning".
I work for as an electrical engineer in the gas and oil industry. Some people are married and like to stay in the office. We tend to travel at most 3 weeks a year. Other people are single and do not mind travel. They go to the job site, and ensure that the electrical equipment was properly installed, and operates as required. Those with instrumentation and control experience also stay at the job site to program any PLCs, and verify the proper operation of the computer networks.
Often when working "in the field" you work more hours, and make more money.
See Wikipedia for "Project commissioning".
How do you get jobs like this?
The company I am with (CBI) hires people out of college and puts them in the office for 3 to 6 months, so they get a feel for what they will be doing in the field. Then they are often sent "to the field" or to some industrial facility. These facilities are all over the planet. My boss worked in Egypt for a few years, my co-worker's last assignment was to Singapore.
Where?
Construction engineering consulting firms operate all over the planet. Large firms like Fluor Corporation, Jacobs Engineering, and CBI will send you all over the planet. Smaller firms are often limited to local projects.
I hope that helps!
