A social worker helps people in social service agencies, like nonprofit organizations that serve the poor. For the universities you're looking at, ask them where their graduates have ended up. As to what they do, they meet with people, see what they need, and find ways to get others to help. Or they might counsel people who are having difficulties, like parents with children that act out.

Get a job in a daycare center.
