Career Questions and Answers

How can I figure out what I really want my career to be?
Asked by Android E
Currently I am working on majoring in mechanical engineering, but my heart is just not in it. I am only taking this path because it pays well. Can you give me some advice?

Hey, I can say I've been in your boat. I first went into college to pursue a degree in Mech. Engineering as well. My dad is an engineer, and I've always been into designing things, drawing in cad, building 'stuff', etc. I wasn't caring a whole lot for the math aspect of it, so I finished getting all my general ed courses out of the way. Aviation had always been a passion of mine, as I had already been flying for about 5 years, but I didn't want to fly commercially for various reasons. My neighbor, however, was an air traffic controller and got me real interested in doing that. High pay, not too hard to get into, and it was aviation related. So, that's the path I went down. I started off making more than an engineer's starting salary (which is still really good!). Long story short, after about 4 years (last June), and after having been certified in a major international tower, I left the FAA. It just wasn't for me. So now, I'm back in school and finishing up my BS in Mech. Engineering. I feel I'm pretty well suited for it, just got to get through the calculus. From here, who knows! I bet there's guys a lot older than us who still havn't decided what they "want to be when they grow up". :-) It just takes time. For now, do your best to explore all your options, considering your own personal interests, things you LIKE doing. There are plenty of options out there that I'm sure you'd enjoy AND pays well. Of course, engineering is one field that IS hiring and DOES pay well. But, money is NOT everything. If it was, I would have stayed where I was. But that would be too easy, and not what I'd really want. Good luck!!
