Is it legal for a 14 year old to get £2.50 an hour for working in a cafe?
Asked by Jess
I've got my job trial on sat, but Mum said its appauling if i only get 2.50 an hour, so I can't work there, but this is only word of mouth and I haven't met the owner yet to ask but if it is.. surely I should be entitled to more for waitressing etc? Very unhelpful 4 answers by scammers :/

The minimum wage only applies to 16 year olds and over. I'd be careful of starting any work at 14 without checking that the necessary employer insurances etc are in place. What if you have an accident at work - are you covered? If you have a trial it is as much about you checking them out as it is about them testing you. Ask what the wage is and if it is not what you are looking for then you need to decide whether the experience you are getting makes up for the lack of cash. Many people at the moment can't find any work and would be grateful just to get a chance to have some experience.

There is no minimum wage until you are 16 and in full time employment. Employers can pay you just 1p an hour until then, and legally get away with it. Sorry, but that's the way it works.

I paid my 14 year old saturday girls £3.50 ph, this was more than other business's in the area. Wait and see what you are offered. Its good experience for you and can be fun, my girls loved it. Better to have low money than none at all.
