Is it legal for my employer to insist that I show her the police report on my broken-into car?
Asked by Jackie
So, long story short, the other day I had my car broken into. So, I called into work a few hours early to give my employer a heads up that I would be in late, and to give her enough time to get someone to cover my shift. It was the first time I had ever been late to work, or called in to cancel a shift, and I always take on extra ones at the last minute to cover for others, so my boss had no reason to not trust me.
Anyways, I show up late, like I told her I would be, and she basically tells me I'm lying and insists on showing her the police report. And then, today, she calls to say that if I don't bring in the police report, she'll "just have to find someone to cover all of my shifts this week".
So, I'm wondering, is it even legal for her to insist on seeing the report, when it has absolutely nothing to do with work? And is that last call I got legal either? It sounded very much like blackmail.

sorry but it is no different than saying your grandmother died, they can ask for proof and if you don't submit you run the risk of termination, quite legal

Looks like they want proof for your alibi. It's perfectly legal.
However, it doesn't sound like a very good place to work.

i would report your manager to HR asap. However you should bring in the police report. Luckily when I was late to work for being pulled over, I was very close to my work and my managers saw my car, so that was verification enough for them!
