Diversity at Wiley Rein is a function of recruitment and retention. We recruit by leading, drawing attorneys from all backgrounds to work with, and eventually become, leaders in more than two-dozen areas of law. Recent examples of the leadership roles played by women and minority attorneys at Wiley Rein include:
- Partner Theodore A. Howard was selected by the Legal Aid Society of the District of Columbia as a recipient of its 17th Annual Servant of Justice Award. The award recognizes superior dedication and achievement in ensuring equal and meaningful access to justice in the District of Columbia.
- Partner Nancy J. Victory was appointed by Federal Communications Chairman Kevin J. Martin to serve as Chair of the FCC's Independent Panel Reviewing the Impact of Hurricane Katrina on Communications Networks.
- Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business recognized Wiley Rein's 40-plus attorney Insurance Practice as among the DC area's best. Laura A. Foggan and Theodore A. Howard were named “Leading Individuals” in their field, and John C. Yang was singled out as an “Up-and-Coming Individual.” Ratings are based on extensive interviews of law firms' clients, colleagues and competitors.
- Consulting Counsel John C. Yang has been elected chair of the National Asian Pacific American Legal Consortium, the leading national organization advancing issues involving human and civil rights affecting the Asian American community.
We also undertake focused and targeted efforts to recruit women and minority attorneys through participation in minority law school association events and through active participation in minority bar associations. Most recently, the firm was the proud recipient of the Sodexho Law Department's Commitment to Diversity Award, presented in recognition of the firm's participation in the department's minority student job shadowing program.
Recognizing that recruitment is only one part of the effort to maintain a diverse workforce, Wiley Rein also undertakes equally focused efforts to ensure that once here, all our attorneys are provided full access to opportunities that will allow them to flourish at the firm. Thus, we are committed not only to hiring exceptional women, minority, and non-minority candidates, but to providing them with appropriate work assignments, mentoring, and client networking opportunities that ultimately will allow them to rise to positions of substantial responsibility both with our clients and within the firm. The firm is proud that minority attorneys currently serve as chair/co-chair of the firm's Recruiting, Technology and Services, and Diversity Committees, and that women serve as chair/co-chair of the firm's Associate, Associate Evaluation, Employee Relations, Finance/Client Quality, Ethics and Opinion Letters and Pro Bono Committees.
Wiley Rein's commitment to diversity is underscored by the time and resources it has dedicated to its Diversity Committee. Led by chair Dorthula H. Powell-Woodson and co-chairs Kay Tatum and Charles C. Lemley, the Diversity Committee, along with the firm's Management and Administrative Committees, continue to strengthen and advance Wiley Rein's diversity efforts by identifying innovative programs and initiatives to attract and retain women and minorities, and by developing and maintaining policies and practices that promote a diverse attorney population.
