The Shawnee News-Star Jobs and Profile

Two men from Ardmore, H.G. Spaulding and Hershel Nesbitt, bought the paper later from Weaver. Weaver then re-bought the paper and published it semi-weekly. At the time of his death in 1921, it became a weekly. Spaulding launched a daily, morning paper and published his first issue of the Shawnee Morning News on July 1, 1920.

In June1929, the Morning News was purchased by Stauffer Publications, Inc.

The Shawnee Evening Star, a second daily newspaper, first appeared on Thursday, May 1, 1930. The first issue had 16 pages. Its front page banner headline announced the lifting of the state proration order on Shawnee oil fields. The paper sold for 10 cents per week, or 18 cents for the morning-evening combination.

In the days of World War II, the Shawnee Morning News and Shawnee Evening Star combined and became The Shawnee News-Star on March 2, 1943. The consolidation reportedly was mostly due to staffing problems caused by the war.

The News-Star was acquired by Morris Communications in 1995 as part of its purchase of Stauffer Communications Inc.

Today, The Shawnee News-Star is truly a multi-media company. In addition to publishing a 6-day daily, ¿ Tuesday through Sunday. In addition, the News-Star publishes other niche publications and handles commercial printing for many regional clients.

The News-Star has a Web site that publishes breaking news 24/7 with monthly traffic approaching 1 million page views per month and an audience of 94% not subscribing to the paper. Under the direction of Richard Anderson, the New Media department continues to explore and deploy innovative interactive readership technologies targeted to this increasing audience growth.
