Since 1898, The Examiner has been the voice of Eastern Jackson County, Miss.
The Examiner began as The Jackson Examiner on Feb. 19,1898 through its founder, William Southern Jr., who guided it for 53 years. Southern, who was editor and publisher of the newspaper until 1951, wrote his own obituary and selected the photo to run with it when the time came on Feb. 10, 1956. Former U.S. President Harry S Truman was one of his pallbearers. The newspaper went daily in 1905 as the Independence Examiner. It became part of Morris Communications Co. in 1995 with the purchase of the Stauffer Corporation.
