The Hillsdale (MICH. )Daily News traces its origins to The Hillsdale County Gazette, which began on April 13, 1839, in Jonesville, Mich., shortly after the first white settlers moved to the area.

Jonesville then was a tiny village on the Sauk Trail. It was only 10 years old, but it was the county¿s main settlement and the county seat.

A few years later, the newspaper moved to Hillsdale, a hamlet to the south.

Owner N.P. Walper briefly moved the newspaper to Three Rivers for four years but returned it to Hillsdale in 1859 and changed the name to The Hillsdale Democrat.

D.W. Grandon bought the Democrat and The Hillsdale Standard and combined them in March of 1909 to create The Hillsdale Herald, which evolved into the Hillsdale Daily News.

In June of 1974, the Daily News became part of the Stauffer Communications chain and then, 20 years later, became part of Morris Communications Co.
