About Us

Each year, heart disease kills more people than any other disease. As much as 40 percent of every healthcare dollar is spent fighting the problem, and everyone is seeking a solution. Patients want new and better ways of healing. So do physicians. Community and business leaders want to reduce the impact heart disease has on society. Managed care groups want to lessen the financial impact of heart disease without sacrificing quality of care.

Enter the Heart Hospital of Austin, and the solution we bring. Our approach is comprehensive, cost-effective, physician-led and patient-focused. And all our resources are dedicated to keeping the heart healthy and treating it when it's not.

Patient-focused care is the key to the success of this hospital and others like it. Few specialized heart hospitals exist in the US, and only a handful of those are totally designed around patients, such as the Heart Hospital of Austin and its sister facilities. Eight of those are affiliated with Austin's new hospital, including Heart Hospitals in

Each of these hospitals are managed by local physicians in partnership with one of the nation's leading operators of specialized cardiology facilities, MedCath, Inc.

* The Harlingen Medical Center will focus on cardiovascular care as well as orthopedics, neurology, obstetrics and gynecology. Designed by cardiologists and surgeons, the Heart Hospital of Austin is a three story, 138,000 square-feet, 58 bed facility located in Central Park at 38th Street and North Lamar Blvd. The building is set back from the busy intersection in a campus setting shaded by century-old oak trees.

At the Heart Hospital of Austin, each room is a private, self-contained intensive care unit. Equipment and medical staff come to the patient. The usual wheeling-around the hospital from one floor to another is eliminated. The same specialized cardiovascular care team can remain with the patient. Nursing staff get to know the patients better because they are likely to remain in the care of the same nursing station throughout their stay. Nurses have a chance to observe a patient's condition more closely, talk with their families, and alert doctors to changes.

Since opening in December, 1998, the Heart Hospital of Austin has 269 clinical and administrative personnel with access to some of the region's newest and most advanced diagnostic and surgical equipment.

The surgical operating suites are 30 percent larger than an average operating room. Two of the operating suites are used for heart surgery, and a third suite offers the latest treatments for peripheral vascular disease.

Three cardiac catheterization laboratories help physicians diagnose and treat cardiovascular disease. One of the three labs is dedicated to the diagnosis of vascular disease, which includes the carotid arteries (which when diseased can cause strokes), renal arteries, aorta, and the vessels of the legs.

The hospital has a six-bed post-anesthesia care unit, a state-of-the-art electrophysiology lab, a radiology unit, and a clinical laboratory.

In addition to acute care rooms, the hospital has 12 private rooms dedicated to a day patient unit especially designed for patients undergoing out-patient tests and treatment.

Families are considered part of the recovery process. The Heart Hospital of Austin encourages family members to stay around-the-clock with patients. In most cases families are allowed to wait in patients' rooms as they emerge from surgery.

To create a warm, home-like environment, each patient room is large and private, with large windows offering views. Each room has an oversized guest chair that converts to a bed for a guest, and bookshelves for displaying get well cards or family photographs. Just as newly designed maternity centers are improving the experience for new parents, the Heart Hospital of Austin extends a warm, home setting that is extended to cardiac patients and family members.

A hospital stay can be an incredibly stressful time for patients and their families. At the Heart Hospital of Austin we aim to offer a sense of comfort and personal touches to ease the stress.
