About ARC

In 1952, the parents of children with developmental disabilities saw the need to provide educational and vocational services for their children. These programs were not available in the public school systems and parents were left with two options: put their children in an institution or keep them at home. The parent’s determination and perseverance combined with support from local businesses and corporations allowed these needs to be met. Local postal workers went door-to-door in 1953 to help raise over $10,000 to get more services started. Today Schenectady ARC is a nearly $22 million agency and is among Schenectady County’s top 7 employers with close to 500 employees. Schenectady ARC has grown from serving 14 children to providing comprehensive quality programs and services to over 1,000 individuals – from infants to seniors – in Schenectady County and throughout the Capital District. Schenectady ARC has grown from a little red schoolhouse to providing residential, vocational, transitional, day care, day services, health care, transportation and family services at over 20 facilities, including 3 Day Service locations, 19 group residences, a work center, administrative offices as well as a transportation center and clinic. Schenectady ARC prides themselves in improving the quality of life and level of independence for people with developmental disabilities and their families, while being a positive contributor to the community. Schenectady ARC and those served by the agency work, live and volunteer in Schenectady County everyday and strive to make the community a better place. We are a part of the largest family based organizations in the country as well as a member of one of the world’s largest non-profit organization, The Arc of the United States.
