A Societal Problem
Youth who have engaged in dangerous behaviors, such as being assaultive, abusing substances, stealing, destroying property, and running away, are often very difficult to manage and difficult to treat. They are generally resistant to intervention, mistrustful of adults, and have lost hope of being successful in society. They have often developed an ingrained pattern of delinquent behaviors that can be very difficult to break.
How We Can Help
We specialize in working with difficult populations, and we excel at providing a safe, behaviorally controlled setting. Stevens offers treatment approaches that address each youth’s unique needs. Specialization provides a more intensive, consistent, and concentrated approach, improving the quality of treatment and the chances for success.
How the Program Works
For the emotionally disturbed, behaviorally disordered youth, treatment begins by providing a safe, staff-secure, predictable, and highly structured therapeutic environment staffed by professionals specially trained to work with this population. Within this nurturing environment, treatment providers manage the youth’s out-of-control behavior, until he can learn to do so for himself. As progress is made, they have the opportunity to transition to the intermediate segment of the program. The intermediate phase of treatment provides youth the opportunity to take more responsibility for themselves and the decisions they make. The final segment of treatment is the Stevens Transitional Living Program (TLP), a community-based program.
Youth are assigned to a master’s level clinician who provides weekly individual and family therapy, as well as case management. An initial psychosocial assessment is completed and is designed to clearly identify his problem behaviors, clarify the origins of these behaviors, and determine the underlying emotions that typically drive anti-social behaviors.
Progress in treatment is reviewed after the first six weeks of treatment, and then on a quarterly basis. In addition to the Stevens treatment team, families and outside agency workers are also invited to attend. An updated treatment plan is developed at each meeting with progress noted.

Staff Training
All staff receives an initial forty hours of orientation training before beginning to work with youth. Orientation hours for Behavior Specialists are scheduled at various times to insure they are exposed to various parts of the residents' days (wake-up, bedtime, etc.).
The program nurse trains staff in first aid, universal precautions, administering medications and all other medically related information. Educational staff spends their initial forty hours orienting to the program as well. They review student records, observe in classrooms, and meet with the Educational Director and Educational Administrator.
A yearly in-service schedule is developed for residential and educational staff. The agency provides at least twenty-four hours of in-service training time during the year.
